Betty Richter

Richter , part of the "fatherless" generation of Germans ashamed and troubled by their disgraced Nazi parentage, notoriously eschewed all ideologies or agendas in his work, declaring in his published Notes from 1964, "I like everything that has no style, because style is violence, and I am not violent".

Gerhard Richter Betty (Tate Poster). 1991 Auktion 62

Betty is a portrait of sorts, painted from a photograph of the artist's daughter posed, like Ingres' The Bather at Valpinçon, 1808, so that she is looking away from the viewer. It is oil on canvas, about life size, and so far as I know it's Richter's only color painting of a figure. It was made in 1988; I saw it in London a few years.
